The Yolk - a Periodical

What came first, the chicken or the egg? None, The Yolk!

The Yolk is a newspaper with an eggy twist. It was born as the stealth campaign for a graduation catalog.
Now, it lives as a platform for creative student spotlights and has evolved to connect designers to the broader
community in the city of Enschede, NL. The Yolk tells local, unappreciated, and peculiar stories that
exist in the margins of traditional magazines.

The Yolk is intended to feel as random as our TikTok for you pages,
while embracing the textured quality and physicality of print.
The dying medium of newspapers is combined with a fresh twist
on type design and some bright orange ink.

The publication is entirely handmade: from writing to assemblage,
The Mother Hens take care of every step of the process, mastering riso- and screen printing
techniques. Not one Yolk is printed in the same shade of orange because not one yolk is the same.

The layouts and type stay playful, while the logo is the simplest form of all: the circle.
It grounds the creative explorations of format, type, and image that evolve over every issue.
The experimental quality of the production developed with the team’s confidence.

Issue 1 - Eggesis

Eggesis is the first installment of the newspaper.
A first dip into covering local stories and developing a platform for upcoming artists
and students alike. While not foregoing the charm of classic newspaper content, such as horoscopes
and features, and a scaled-down version of the classic format.

Issue 2 - Incubation

Within the second issue, themes of development and growth are explored through content and format.
Reflecting on eggesis and further developing the essence of The Yolk.

Issue 3 - Hatching

The third edition is all about breaking out of your shell.
Featuring interviews and projects from the graduates of 2024. Exploring ways to enter a new stage of life,
after graduation, but also as a printed entity. Each article has been gifted its own format and color scheme.
All are folded neatly into a 100x100mm package.

Issue 4 - Pecking

Pecking is all things peckish. Whether that means hunger after hatching, or craving a peck on the cheek.
The fourth installment covers themes of longing, yearning, and appetite. Sticking to the format, but this time
wrapped up in a napkin to wipe your face after soaking the content up. And a ziplock bag to save some for later.

Issue 5 - Armeggedon

Armeggedon is the end of the yolk times as we know it.
The issue covers all willing graduate students of 2025. Showing their process,
excerpts, and projects. Favourite memories and more. It serves as an ode to community, collaboration,
and remembering. The last issue in its original shell, number 5, marks the end of the publication in a school
setting as the Mother Hens navigate graduate life and what the yolk will be after.

Documentation is still pending, but enjoy this excerpt and the documentation
of the archival exhibitions during the AKI FINALS in Enschede and PAPERPRINT in Bochum.

Only when the last
chicken has died and
the last albumen been poisoned
and the last coop has been raided

we will realise we cannot hatch
in an abandoned nest...
